Adolescent Medicine

During the rotation in our specialty clinic, residents will be introduced to the spectrum of problems that affect adolescent patients to include:  normal pubertal growth and development and the associated physiologic, anatomic, and behavioral changes; preventive screening, health promotion, disease prevention, and anticipatory guidance; management of common outpatient problems; sports injuries, rehabilitation and preparation; gynecologic examinations and reproductive health, including contraception IUD and Nexplanon procedures, STIs, pregnancy related issues, and sex education; psychosocial issues such as school performance, unique college health experience, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, eating disorders, suicide, and peer and family relations.

Cardiology

Your experience in pediatric cardiology will include daily encounters with children, teenagers, and some adults with congenital and acquired heart disease in outpatient clinics, inpatient wards, and intensive care units.  Additionally, the pediatric cardiology elective will provide an intensive exposure to all aspects of pediatric cardiology.

Hematology-Oncology

The Walter Reed Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Department is the largest in the Department of Defense, caring for dependent children as well as young adult active duty members with blood and oncologic disorders.  During the outpatient rotation, you will see patients for their infusions, routine visits and acute concerns in our clinic.  You will work directly with staff and fellows and participate in weekly fellow didactics.  During the block you will have the opportunity to participate in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including bone marrow biopsies and spinal taps.  You will also have the opportunity to tour and observe the routine diagnostic testing in the Walter Reed Blood Bank.

Teaching
