Play of the Week:


Play of the Week this week goes to Dr. Elizabeth Rahman and her husband on their baby boy born this last week, Hamza! The pictures are adorable- so happy for you all :) Also to Dr. Rebecca Morgis for her bedside ultrasound on a decompensating neonate which prompted identification of a pericardial effusion with Cardiology. Also to Dr. Mckenzie Bowling and Dr. Karina Kauffman Brown who helped compile Gen Peds pearls from Dr. Carr and Dr. Cooper into a document to share with everyone. Additional tips from Dr. Myles and Dr. Madison were added from the Gen Peds roundtable and both documents were combined by Dr. Nicole Saporito. Thanks everyone!

The Uniformed Services University Department of Pediatrics is pleased to announce the 6th Annual Partnership for the Military Child Health Research Symposium. Registration is open now - register here.

Location: Uniformed Services University, Rice Hall and Hall of Flags, with a virtual option to be announced

Our Keynote Speaker will be Susan Kressley, MD, immediate past president of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Additional highlights will include presentations on leading topics in military child and family health and a poster session featuring research on the health and well-being of military-connected children. Attendees will have the opportunity to network and share information on programs and initiatives that support military children and families.

Community Pediatrics/Advocacy Updates:


NEW: What To Expect Baby Shower - We will answer Gen Peds questions, giving out clinic resources & HealthyChildren.Org handouts, teaching parents how to swaddle, promoting things like safe sleep, etc. 

When: Saturday, May 9, 2026 from 11 AM to 2 PM 

Where: Warrior Food Court, Building 62, NSA Bethesda

Needed: 

1. Volunteers for day of event

2. Donations of new baby items (i.e. swaddles, breastfeeding covers, burp cloths, books, childproofing/safety items, and any items you think a newborn would need).

  • Current leave process

    • Please send an email to your military advisor notifying of specific leave requests

    • Please use IPPS-A for all leave/absence requests; go to https://myaccess.dmdc.osd.mil/identitymanagement/app/login and login with your CAC

    • Make sure you change your email in order to receive email notifications -> My Profile -> My Current Profile -> down arrow next to name -> Personal Details -> Contact Details

    • Submit leave

      • Submit Leave to your specific Military Advisor (PGY2/3) or Dr. Stagliano (PGY1)

      • Click My Absences in the home page

      • Complete the appropriate information, an example of chargeable leave is below:

      • Absence Type: 1-Chargeable Absence

      • Absence Name: Absence

      • Absence Reason: 01- Annual (Ordinary) Absence and complete the remainder of the page

      • Enter Start and End Dates

      • For supervisor ID: direct it to your ARMY ADVISOR

      • Complete address information with the location of where you are going

      • Click submit

      • For OCONUS leave: Send to Dr. Ahmed

    • See the powerpoint below for instructions




AIR FORCE

Leave:

  • Please complete, sign, and have Maj Kolasinski sign the attached checklist when submitting leave.

  • Put Maj Kolasinski as first approver and Maj Jean as second approver

  • For the checklist - Overdue items will need a plan for updating or else leave is at jeopardy of not being approved.

  • Here’s how you should answer Checklist:

1 – in JKO ensure that your annual cyberawareness, Hippa, level 1 antiterrorism training are done

2- Check your IMR and ensure all green https://asimsimr.health.mil/imr/myIMR.aspx  if not use comment box to write what is not up to date and plan

3 – BCA tests are due at the end of your birth month

4 – PT test due date. You can check at myfss https://myfss.us.af.mil/USAFCommunity/s/usaf-fitness-management

5 – N/A for residents


For OCONUS leave: Submit to Maj Jean instead of Dr. K or Zanetti with Dr. Reynolds as back up approver



NAVY

Leave:

  • LCDR Sierra Howell is now deployed through August 2025. Please send leave requests to CDR Danielle Barnes. CDR Barnes will be on leave 7/21-7/30, please submit upcoming leave prior to this.

  • When submitting leave, please email CDR Barnes and cc the chief resident

  • Chief Resident will send email confirming that dates have been approved
