Plan of the Week: Feb 2- Feb 6

Play of the Week:

Play of the Week this week goes to our snow day coverage teams who went above and beyond to make sure our units were covered and didn't even complain once! Particularly to Dr. Anna Casey, Dr. Rebecca Morgis, Dr. Melanie Yonko, Dr. Paola Robles-Vera, Dr. Katy Crandall, and Dr. Erin Scroggins who covered during the blizzard on Sunday, many of them spending additional nights in the hospital to ensure they could be at their shifts. Also, Dr. Genesis James, Dr. Andrew Koury, and Dr. Paul McQuillen who had early Monday morning shifts. We are so thankful for you all!

Quality Improvement: Iron supplementation in full-term breastfed infants at 4 month well examsby Dr. Yejin Yoo

For those who could not be there, I want to make sure everyone is included and informed:

  • Problem Statement: AAP recommends that exclusively/predominantly breastfed full-term infants receive 1mg/kg/day of elemental iron starting at 4 months, until iron-rich complementary foods are introduced.

    • Our PCMH clinic has poor compliance of implementing this AAP guideline due to lack of standardization, provider understanding, or inconsistency in parental counseling at well visits.

  • Aim Statement: Increase the proportion of eligible full-term breastfed infants who receive iron supplementation by 4 months of age from X% (baseline) to 90% within 6 months.

  • Team Members:

    • All pediatric staff and residents at WR PCMH

    • Nursing staff

  • Interventions/Change Idea:

    • Implement a visual reminder and documentation template in the EMR at the 4-month well-child visit to prompt clinician to:

1) Prescribe or recommend appropriate iron drops- Please switch D-visol to Poly-visol with Iron at 4 month well exams for exclusively/predominantly breastfed babies

2) Provide appropriate counseling regarding iron- Please give parent iron handout (will be available in exam rooms and on the shared drive)

3) Document counseling and prescription in the EMR- Please use the dot phrase below and include “Start Poly-visol with Iron daily. Counseling provided to parents regarding infant’s iron needs.”

Humanitarian Disaster Response course for USU MS3 students (humanitarian experience not necessary!!)

We need faculty to help lead small groups for cases during an interprofessional education session titled "Humanitarian Disaster Response" for the SOM MS3 students and GSN students (over 200 students). Three of the four cases are pediatric-focused so we are hoping to have as many peds facilitators as possible. This course is held in-person only.

What: lead two small groups of 8-10 students through a clinical case based on a fictional humanitarian disaster response (45min/group)

CASES:

- febrile rash (measles)

- burns (triage, fluids, intro to psych first aid)

- diarrhea/dehydration

 - pregnancy with delivery in a field clinic -- unless specifically requested, we will assign this to instructors from FP and OB/GYN

When: Thurs March 5 from 0730-1100 (students will have a lecture related to the session from 0730-0800)

Where: USU - MDL rooms

How will I be prepared: we will provide you a faculty guide and have an optional virtual fac dev session (with recording available if you can't make it) prior to the IPE

Do I need humanitarian experience? No, but it is helpful if you've ever practiced in a resource limited environment (to include deployment if you are interested and available. Please email Dr. Helfrich (alison.helfrich@usuhs.edu) ASAP if you are interested!
