Play of the Week:
Play of the Week this week goes to Dr. Nicole Saporito who successfully obtained a lumbar puncture of an 8 week old infant in the Children's ED. Play of the Week also goes to Dr. Ellie Dullea who successfully did her first LP on a 20 day infant under guidance of Dr. Scroggins on nights and they stayed well beyond their shift to help out the day team with additional ED admissions! Play of the Week also goes to Dr. Rebecca Morgis, Dr. Simal Ali, and Dr. Jacquelin Doman for helping deliver a newborn in the Walter Reed parking lot over the weekend! I know that the ED was very grateful for your assistance. Also to Dr. Lianna Morales for receiving a personal shout out from Ms. Davis for her organization and kindness during clinic! And to Dr. Leanne Perez and Dr. Jacquelin Doman for planning such a fun holiday party last weekend.

“Quality Improvement: Iron supplementation in full-term breastfed infants at 4 month well exams” by Dr. Yejin Yoo
For those who could not be there, I want to make sure everyone is included and informed:
Problem Statement: AAP recommends that exclusively/predominantly breastfed full-term infants receive 1mg/kg/day of elemental iron starting at 4 months, until iron-rich complementary foods are introduced.
Our PCMH clinic has poor compliance of implementing this AAP guideline due to lack of standardization, provider understanding, or inconsistency in parental counseling at well visits.
Aim Statement: Increase the proportion of eligible full-term breastfed infants who receive iron supplementation by 4 months of age from X% (baseline) to 90% within 6 months.
Team Members:
All pediatric staff and residents at WR PCMH
Nursing staff
Interventions/Change Idea:
Implement a visual reminder and documentation template in the EMR at the 4-month well-child visit to prompt clinician to:
1) Prescribe or recommend appropriate iron drops- Please switch D-visol to Poly-visol with Iron at 4 month well exams for exclusively/predominantly breastfed babies
2) Provide appropriate counseling regarding iron- Please give parent iron handout (will be available in exam rooms and on the shared drive)
3) Document counseling and prescription in the EMR- Please use the dot phrase below and include “Start Poly-visol with Iron daily. Counseling provided to parents regarding infant’s iron needs.”
Also for those who missed the morning report, please fill out this quick 5-question pre-survey
