Play of the Week:
Play of the Week goes to Dan Mahoney-Herbin who convinced a mom to accept Vitamin K for their baby on a busy Saturday!
Additional shout outs to Paola Robles Vera who performed a flawless champagne tap on a neonate with history of E. Coli meningitis; Natalie Goggins who stayed up all night and followed a new PICU admission peripherally - helping him to get settled in even though the PICU was not her responsibility - and handling a ward admission and several consults overnight like a champ with awesome medical decision making; and MS4 Hannah Rahmaan, one of our rotating medical students, for jumping in and assisting the OB team during a C-section delivery when they needed the extra hands.
Thank you all for your dedication to patient care and flexibility!

Gun Safety Contest
Hello Housestaff!
The AFCCP has been working with folks in the military law enforcement arena to create a campaign that promotes gun safety as it relates to children. The trick, in the current environment, is going to be keeping the message focused on the prevention of gun access to children and the consequences of child gun access and NOT “Just keep the guns out of the house.” We’re looking at ways to keep guns out of the hands of kids (e.g., locks, safes, etc.).
The contest winner will be the “best” changes in terms of DoW policies or regulations, whether it’s a change to the current policy or regulation or an addition to the current policies. The judges will consist of Dr. Brennan, Dr. Deye, and our friends from military law enforcement. The winner will get brunch for themselves and guest on Dr. Brennan at Locals Farm Market in Poolesville at a time TBD.
Things to consider:
The current political environment (will these changes in policy actually be approved and implemented). Remember, we’re opening up posts to “open carry” soon if not already.
What do the current policies say?
Does this run counter to the Constitution, or will it be perceived to run counter to the Constitution?
Who needs to be the proponent for this policy or is there already a proponent agency?
Please submit your entry to COL Brennan (brian.w.brennan.mil@health.mil) by July 31, 2026.
Teddy Bear Clinic 2026
It is once again almost that time of year for the annual Teddy Bear Clinic! For our interns or those who were unable to participate last year, this “clinic” is a fantastic opportunity for residents to volunteer a few hours one Saturday teaching the nation’s smallest soldiers/airmen/sailors (and their fuzzy friends) about fitness, nutrition, and their overall health. Last year the event was attended by over 350 parents/children, and they anticipate another good turnout.
This clinic is hosted by the National Museum of Health and Medicine, located at 2500 Linden Lane, Silver Spring, MD 20910. The event will take place on Saturday, September 19, 2026 from 0930 – 1130. They are looking for volunteers to lead the following stations:
Vitals
Immunization
Nutrition
Crafts
Dental
Fitness (this station the volunteers will need to bring their own supplies and have a planned activity for the kids)
Please use the following sign-up sheet. POC: Keenan Caswell, keenan.r.caswell.mil@health.mil
AAP SOUS Trainee Needs Assessment
LT Emily Jaberi is the new Trainee Liaison for the AAP Section on Uniformed Services. She is a recent graduate from Naval Medical Center Portsmouth and currently a second-year PICU Fellow at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
In her role as Trainee Liaison, she wants to ensure that our residents 1) maximize their AAP membership benefits, 2) have a voice in our section’s work, and 3) feel connected to the greater SOUS community.
She has created a needs assessment to better serve our trainees and help guide her work for the upcoming year. The deadline for submission is September 1, 2026. If residents completed the survey last year, they are welcome to submit again.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out to LT Jaberi at emily.a.bush@hotmail.com with any questions, comments, or concerns.

This website is a new product of a year-long collaborative project between 50+ pediatric residencies including NCC Pediatrics. It is a great, quick snapshot of multiple general pediatrics topics that are outpatient focused. Since our program participated, we have full access to the modules by logging in under “Walter Reed National Capital Consortium.” It will ask for the last four numbers of your phone number for tracking participation. Please let Dr. Carr know if there seems to be a problem with recognition of phone numbers.
Outpatient Lactation Resources
Our clinic-embedded lactation consultant is now out on maternity leave. Please see below for additional support and resources.
Walter Reed: Dr. Kara Garcia, one of our general pediatricians, has lactation appointments Tuesday/Thursday mornings. Touch base with the front desk staff to schedule these appointments.
JB Andrews/Malcolm Grow Medical Center: NP Howell is available to see patients for Lactation Appointments on Tuesdays while she is at JB Andrews. To schedule, call the Malcolm Grow clinic at (240)612-1140.
Dumfries Clinic: Casey Dalton is an outpatient IBCLC at the ATAMMC Dumfries clinic available for lactation support M-F from 0800-1600. Patients can call them directly to schedule as it’s the fastest: 703-441-7608. There is no limit to how many times parents can be seen since this service is through the MTF. This is a great resource for families who lives closer to the Dumfries clinic. See the flyer below.
