Updated: May 10, 2022

Play of the Week:

Play of the week to Drs. Jenny Bencze, Karin Brockman, Peter Broughton, Sarah Cole, Emily Ferraro, Brian Graziose, David Horvat, Ben Jack, Elizabeth Ketchum, Suhani Patel, Elise Reddington, Donald Rees, Patrick Reeves, Sidney Zven for their amazing presentations at the NCR Research Symposium last week. Don't forget to check out their posters this week on the first floor of Arrowhead!

Play of the week also goes to Dr. Geracht for setting up and running an amazing PFCCS course for our residents last week! We could not prepare ourselves to take care of critically ill children without you!

Play of the week finally goes to the residents for taking care of their fellow residents during times of need. Your dedication to each other stands out and only magnifies your character --thank you all!

Announcements:

All Staff:

  • We are working on a care package to send to the medics in Dr. Schacht's platoon. As you know, Dr. Schacht was recently deployed to Poland. During his time on deployment, he has become a mentor for the medics in his platoon, many of whom are adolescents and away from home for the first time. With his characteristic kindness and generosity, he reached out to see if we could assemble items to donate to the medics in his unit as a morale booster.

    • If you would like to contribute items, please sign up using the link, and include your name, email address. Items can be dropped off in the Chief Resident Office (America Bldg, 4th Floor, Room 4560).

    • If you prefer to donate money rather than items, please feel free to swing by the Chief Resident Office to drop off cash or a check (to Leela Patel), or Venmo (@leela-patel). I will use the funds to order any outstanding items on the list.

  • Please complete your Summer Safety Training for the hospital -- located on the intranet banner and on Relias!

  • Help the ward discharge PI/QI team out by filling out their survey, here!

  • Please be advised of the following changes to pharmacy operations, effective June 6, 2022:

    • Same-day refills will no longer be filled. Refills must be called in ahead of time and picked up ONLY at the Drive-Thru pick up or the NEX.

    • All NEW prescriptions will be processed at the Arrowhead and America pharmacies only.

    • There will likely be changes to the pediatric pharmacy hours/availability, though these details have not yet finalized. Stay tuned for further updates.

    • The above changes will be messaged to patients via PAO (i.e. updates on social media and on the intranet, etc.), but patients will likely need reminders once the changes are in effect.

    • For staff who need to pick up prescriptions- please be advised that you can request refills using your CAC-enabled computer at apps5.capmed.mil/StaffPharmacyRefills/Home/Index. Prescriptions will be ready within 2 hours at America or Arrowhead and you will receive a text when they are ready. When you arrive to the pharmacy, pick up a ticket at the kiosk that says "MTF Staff" to bypass the line and be issued your prescriptions.

  • In more uplifting news, Harriet Lane is now available on the uCentral App via the Darnall Medical Library! For instructions on how to create an account, visit https://wrnmmc.libanswers.com/faq/362286. If you have any issues establishing an account, contact dha.bethesda.j-11.list.wrnm-librarians@mail.mil

  • Interested in applying for neonatology fellowship? The AAP's Organization of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Training Program Directors (ONTPD) and Trainees and Early Career Neonatologists (TECaN) are hosting a webinar series titled, "Mastering the Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship Application" on Thursday May 11th at 7PM Eastern time. Register here and see the infographic below for further details.

  • The Darnall Medical Library and the WRNMMC DEI Council are hosting a Book Club and series of discussions focused on Dr. Damon Tweedy's memoir, "Black Man in a White Coat." Discussions will be held monthly from May through August at the NICoE’s Central Park on the second floor of Building 51. See flyer below for details so you can join in for the sessions!

  • Need to find contact information for staff or a department within the NCR medical facilities? Check out the electronic Scutdog here, or stop by the Chief Office (America Bldg, 4th Floor, Room 4560) for a print copy.

  • For resident scheduling in clinic:

    • When you are preparing for your continuity clinic for the week and notice logistical issues with your schedule (i.e., two patients booked in the same slot, siblings booked with you but in non-consecutive time slots, complex patients booked into short appointment times, etc), please complete the following steps, ideally no later than the night before your clinic:
