Play of the Week:
Play of the Week this week goes to Dr. Grace Manno who completed a beautiful LP on a squirmy 3 month old infant on the ward overnight with the assistance of her awesome intern Dr. Ellie Dullea! They both maintained their cool under pressure in less than ideal circumstances and got flow on the first poke! They also provided great counseling to the parents who had previously refused the procedure in an outside ED and were able to help them understand the importance of the procedure and address the concerns they raised with confidence and poise. Play of the Week also goes to Nurse OG in Gen Peds clinic who helped obtain an EKG in clinic with a very scared, screaming young boy which helped obtain diagnostic clarity in a tough situation! Also a huge shoutout to everyone who covered for me while I was away :) Especially Anna Casey, Anna Raymond, Mckenzie Bowling, and Brenda Zhang who were acting chief while I was away.
Schedule:
*Of note, morning report will be cancelled on days of weather cancellations or delays* Thank you so much to everyone covering the inpatient units!

“Quality Improvement: Iron supplementation in full-term breastfed infants at 4 month well exams” by Dr. Yejin Yoo
For those who could not be there, I want to make sure everyone is included and informed:
Problem Statement: AAP recommends that exclusively/predominantly breastfed full-term infants receive 1mg/kg/day of elemental iron starting at 4 months, until iron-rich complementary foods are introduced.
Our PCMH clinic has poor compliance of implementing this AAP guideline due to lack of standardization, provider understanding, or inconsistency in parental counseling at well visits.
Aim Statement: Increase the proportion of eligible full-term breastfed infants who receive iron supplementation by 4 months of age from X% (baseline) to 90% within 6 months.
Team Members:
All pediatric staff and residents at WR PCMH
Nursing staff
Interventions/Change Idea:
Implement a visual reminder and documentation template in the EMR at the 4-month well-child visit to prompt clinician to:
1) Prescribe or recommend appropriate iron drops- Please switch D-visol to Poly-visol with Iron at 4 month well exams for exclusively/predominantly breastfed babies
2) Provide appropriate counseling regarding iron- Please give parent iron handout (will be available in exam rooms and on the shared drive)
3) Document counseling and prescription in the EMR- Please use the dot phrase below and include “Start Poly-visol with Iron daily. Counseling provided to parents regarding infant’s iron needs.”
