USU Teaching Opportunities

Clerkship Round Robin (recurring throughout the year)

  • Contact Dr. Meaghan Wido (meaghan.wido@usuhs.edu) iif interested

  • Tentative Dates and Times: TBA

  • Designed to mimic a clinic half day, each faculty member will be in an MDL room with your particular case. The students have 30 minutes with you to go through the case/skills. The students will move. You stay put and will deliver the same content 5 times to groups of 9-10 students.

  • It's time to start preparing your abstracts for Research & Information month!

  • Submissions are due by January 26, 2025 (see attachment below for timelines)

APA Conference 2025-Abstracts due December 1st

  • The annual APA (Academic Pediatric Association) Region 4 meeting will be held February 22-23 at the Omni Hotel in Charlottesville, VA

  • Dr. Lopreiato is hoping for a strong military showing of faculty and resident projects!

  • Submission guidance can be found here: https://regionabstract.academicpeds.org/ 

    • APA welcomes all types of child health focused scholarship, including research, quality improvement, and educational scholarship

    • APA follows the same submission requirements as PAS, (Abstract Submission Guidelines.docx), namely a 2,600 character limit (including spaces) and the ability to upload tables and figures.

    • Works in progress will be considered for poster presentation

Community Pediatrics/Advocacy Updates:


NEW: Holiday Food Donation Opportunities

  • The Advocacy Committee will be coordination donation of food during the upcoming holiday season. See the options below for three opportunities to contribute!

    • Donate a Store-Bought Pie: We have a goal of donating 50 store bought pies to the community organiziation Nourishing Bethesda. Fill out this survey as a "pie pledge." https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/WFYCBNY.

      • All pies must be brought to the resident room on 20NOV no later than 1200.

    • Monetary Donation: All money collected for this effort will go into purchasing requested food items by Nourishing Bethesda, with the remaining funds being donated to this organization for future food drives. Please send funds by 19NOV @ 1600. Please Venmo @Marian-Joy-Baluyot with the description "For Nourishing Bethesda."

    • Donate Non-Perishable Food: Now through 20DEC, we are collecting nonperishable food items to donate to families in need within Montgomery County for the holiday season. Please stop by the resident room or precepting room anytime before 20DEC to drop off food items.

  • Registration is open for the 2025 AAP Advocacy Conference, which will take place March 2 - 4 in Arlington, VA!

CATCH Grant Applications- NOW OPEN!

  • CATCH stands for Community Access to Child Health and offers funding for pediatricians and pediatric residents to perform projects addressing healthcare disparities in their communities

    • Please use IPPS-A for all leave/absence requests; go to https://myaccess.dmdc.osd.mil/identitymanagement/app/login and login with your CAC

    • Make sure you change your email in order to receive email notifications -> My Profile -> My Current Profile -> down arrow next to name -> Personal Details -> Contact Details

    • Submit leave

      • Submit Leave to your specific Military Advisor

      • Click My Absences in the home page

      • Complete the appropriate information, an example of chargeable leave is below:

      • Absence Type: 1-Chargeable Absence

      • Absence Name: Absence

      • Absence Reason: 01- Annual (Ordinary) Absence and complete the remainder of the page

      • Enter Start and End Dates

      • For supervisor ID: direct it to your ARMY ADVISOR

      • Complete address information with the location of where you are going

  • Please complete and sign the attached checklist when submitting leave.

  • Put Dr. Zanetti as 1st Approver, and email checklist to both.

  • For the checklist - When out of training these are items that will result in leave not being approved. I will NOT be rejecting leave, but if there are things overdue we need a plan to get updated. If you have a lot of overdue items and you are doing OCONUS or leave requiring commanders signature this could cause issues, but we’ll address that if it comes up.

  • Here’s how you should answer Checklist:

1 – in JKO ensure that your annual cyberawareness, Hippa, level 1 antiterrorism training are done

2- Check your IMR and ensure all green https://asimsimr.health.mil/imr/myIMR.aspx  if not use comment box to write what is not up to date and plan

  • Plan to submit a draft of your block 41 in the attached NMRTC Bethesda FITREP template and Brag sheet to your advisor by Monday, 18NOV (Fissel-Lopreiato, Smith-Madison, Bowling and Spirnak-Wido, Neal and Paulson-Ferrara) to allow time to edit before the command due date of 29NOV.

Play of the Week:


Play of the Week: Goes to Dr. Anna Raymond and Dr. Connor Liggett for their efforts last weekend during a busy call-shift that included a parking garage delivery (!) and resucitaiton of a sick infant who required intubation in the OR. Great work!
